Decathlon Award

What is the Decathlon Award?

The Decathlon Award recognizes exceptional CYT students who have demonstrated a love for theater by pursuing a well-rounded education in the theater arts and who have exhibited a character consistent with CYT values. The award includes a certificate of recognition, as well as a personal letter of recommendation from the CYT National Board of Directors.
Students interested in Decathlon Award may sign up below to get program updates, deadline information, and early notification of special opportunities.

*Students can start working towards completing their Decathlon Award the show season they turn 12.

Criteria

The Decathlon Award will be awarded to students, aged 16-18, who have met the following requirements, within the past 5 seasons:
  1. Completion of 10 CYT Classes*
    • 2 Music Classes
    • 2 Dance Classes (must be different styles)
    • 2 Drama Classes
    • 2 Specialty Classes (Improv, makeup, technical, audition workshop, etc.) One week of Summer Camp may be substituted for one class session.
    • 2 additional Classes, any focus
       
  2. Participation in 10 CYT Productions**
    • At least 1 as a cast member
    • At least 1 as a crew member
       
  3. Participation in a volunteer position during 1 CYT Session
    • Such as serving on a parent team like hair & makeup, ushering for house, helping with refreshments, etc. or helping with classes as a class aid, being a summer camp volunteer, etc.
       
  4. Participation in good standing for two years membership in HYPE OR Documented 40 hours of community service through church, school or civic organization
     
  5. The names and emails of a CYT Teacher and a CYT Director that are willing to give personal recommendations to CYT HQ on your behalf. 
    • 1 CYT Teacher the student has taken a CYT class from
    • 1 CYT Director the student has worked with
    • CYT headquarters will contact the teacher and director via email to complete a recommendation form on your behalf. 
       
  6. Completion of a written Essay
    • In 350-500 words, explain CYT’s impact in making you the person you are today. Explain how CYT has nurtured and facilitated your growth in character. Who and what specifically from your CYT experience contributed to that growth?
* A completed class means fulfilling the entire session (with one absence allowed). Repeating the same class does not count as two classes. 
 
** COVID-19 Production Eligibility Accommodations:  Being cast or planning to crew in a cancelled Spring 2020 production and/or participating in Fall 2020 "Fall into Plays" apply towards your Decathlon eligibility. Winter 2021 also can apply towards Decathlon eligibility if you would have participated in a production (either as cast or crew) had it been offered.
